An $8,000 kosher kitchen, which will serve kosher food to Jewish patients, was opened formally here today at St. Joseph’s Hospital, a Catholic institution conducted by the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Rabbi Joseph F. Safsel, of Shomrei Habrith Synagogue, was appointed by the hospital as the supervisor over the preparation and serving of the foods in strict accord with Jewish dietary laws.
The step was taken, according to Sister St. Robert, administrator of the hospital, to provide “greater peace of mind” to those patients who are accustomed to kosher food. “We know,” said Sister St. Robert, “that a patient who is used to certain menus and to having his food prepared and served in accordance with his religious beliefs will find greater peace of mind at the hospital if he can obtain that food here.”
