Israel Ambassador Avraham Harman and Syria’s. Charge d’Affaires here, A. Aziz Allouni, were called to the State Department today and told that the United States is concerned over the renewed border fighting between the two nations.

Later, at a news briefing, State Department news chief Lincoln White told reporters that Philip Talbot, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, had expressed to both the Israeli and Syrian envoys that the State Department hoped the cease-fire worked out by the UN over the weekend “would be observed.” Mr. White told newsmen that the Department had only fragmentary reports on today’s new incident.

At the Israel Embassy, a spokesman said that Ambassador Harman “had taken the opportunity in his discussions with Assistant Secretary Talbot to reiterate Israel’s position on the situation.”
