Syria today formally requested a meeting of the Security Council “for the purposes of examining the grave situation arising from the acts of aggression by Israel on the Syrian frontier and in the demilitarized zone.”
Dr. Carlos Sosa-Rodriguez of Venezuela, this month’s President of the Security Council, is expected to call a meeting of the body for some day next week. The Syrian letter did not make his request urgent.
It is believed that Syria avoided giving its request a tone of immediacy because the United Nations is still awaiting a comprehensive report of last Saturday’s Israel raid on the Syrian gun positions and of Israel’s justifications for its reprisal from Major General Carl C. von Horn, chief of staff of the UN Truce Supervision Organization in Palestine.
General von Horn, it is known, has reported to Acting Secretary General U Thant the so-called “operational phases” of the latest series of clashes between Israel and Syria. However, he has not yet reported comprehensively on the entire situation, including Israel’s charge that Syria had committed ten acts of aggression by firing on Israeli boats on Lake Tiberias.
Michael S. Comay, chairman of the Israel delegation, who has already formally informed the Security Council of Israel’s justification for the action against Syria, was busy here today conferring with top members of the Secretariat as well as with leading members of the Security Council. He met with Mr. Thant, who was accompanied to the conference by Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, Undersecretary for Special Political Affairs. Later, he also conferred with Adlai E. Stevenson, head of the United States delegation here.
