The Allied Jewish Campaign of the Jewish Welfare Federation here opened last night with advanced gifts totaling $3,333,966. It was the highest sum announced at the opening of any Jewish fund-raising function in the history of Detroit.
The initial gifts came from 6,504 contributors. The amount announced at the opening, meeting last night is 72 percent of the total raised in 1961. The campaign goal this year has been set at $5,904,000.
Paul Zuckerman, campaign chairman, called the campaign the “heartbeat” of the Detroit Jewish community. “It is the one great medium through which we reach out to our people, he said. “We must use it to deliver hope and promise for a new and better life.” Max M. Fisher, president of the Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation, and Charles Gershenson, co-chairman of the Allied Campaign, also addressed Tuesday’s meeting.
Aryeh Pincus, treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Israel, who was the principal speaker at the event, called the Arab-Israel conflict a symptom of the cold war. “If the Soviet Union were to withdraw support from leaders such as Egypt’s Nasser, the Arabs would immediately see the advantages of concluding a peace treaty with Israel.” he declared.
