A resolution calling on the United States to offer “its good offices” for a resumption of direct negotiations for a peaceful settlement between Israel and the Arab states was introduced in the Senate today by Democratic Senator Thomas J. Dodd of Connecticut.
In a speech accompanying his resolution, Sen. Dodd called the “unsettled situation in the Middle East” a serious threat not only to the peace of that area but to the entire world. He expressed fear that the Russians will take advantage of the atmosphere of continuing crisis to gain a further Middle Eastern foothold.
“It is thus in the interest of the United States and of the entire free world in general that a normal situation be created in the Middle East, advantageous and satisfactory to both the Israelis and the Arabs,” Sen. Dodd told the Senate.
