A memorandum requesting Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller’s backing of proposed New York State legislation to permit those who close their business on Saturdays to keep their shops open on Sundays was presented to the Governor here today by a group of representatives of rabbinical organizations.
Governor Rockefeller told the delegation, headed by Rabbi Meir Cohen, director of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada, that he sympathizes with the views presented. The governor added, however, that there are difficulties in the path of State adoption of the type of legislation requested by the delegation.
In addition to asking that New York State amend its Sunday closing law, the delegation also requested backing for a proposal that the State forbid interference with the conduct of funerals on Sundays, as demanded by some cemeteries and unions.
