Role of Jewish Women in So. African Life Praised by Johannesburg Mayor

Mayor Keith Fleming today paid tribute to the role Jewish women play in South African life, both in caring for their own and participating in wider public service. The mayor extended a civic welcome to delegates from all parts of South Africa and Rhodesia, attending the Silver Jubilee Conference of the Union of Jewish Women of South Africa.

Mrs. J. M. Raath, president of the “Suid Afrikaanse Vroue Federasie.” representative of the organization of Afrikaner women, especially welcomed the Union of Jewish Women’s efforts to promote inter-group goodwill and cooperation. “Let’s join hands and uplift all we can,” she said. Dr. Thelma Gutsche, speaking for the National Council of South African Women, preaised the wide character of UJW services.

The out-going national UJW president, Pearl Mandelstam, in a keynote address, outlined the growing scope of UJW activities, stressing that through them Jewish women were serving both their own community and South Africa.
