Attorney Gen. Gideon Hausner today concluded his rebuttal to the defense of Eichmann’s appeal against his death sentence, presented by the Nazi’s defense counsel Dr. Robert Servatius, with a request to the five-justice panel of the Supreme Court to reject Eichmann’s appeal.
“Let it be said in Jerusalem clearly and unequivocally that whoever embarks on the ways of an Eichmann, hatred of man and murder, who tries to obtain rule and power by Eichmann-like evils, whoever follows in his path, his end will be shame, his punishment death,” the prosecutor said. He declared that there would be “no sense” in the punishment laid down in Israel’s law against Nazis and collaborators “if maximum punishment will not be meted out to Eichmann.”
Justice Yitzhak Olshan, presiding judge and president of the Supreme Court, indicated today that the court probably would not allow Dr. Servatius to call any new witnesses, as he had requested. This became apparent when the prosecutor expressed objection to the West German attorney’s efforts to introduce at the hearing the content of a manuscript Eichmann wrote during his year-long imprisonment before his trial began in April last year. Dr. Servatius has contended that Eichmann wanted to express his “inner feelings” about the Nazi genocide. Justice Olshan told the prosecutor that he need not pursue this matter.
