The West Berlin Senate of the Interior paid an hour-long tribute to 44 citizens of West Germany as unsung heroes who had hidden Jewish fellow-citizens or other persecuted Germans during the Nazi regime.

Many of them did so for years and frequently were in constant danger of their own lives for shielding those hunted by the Nazis. The occasion was organized to commemorate a period of German history when there had been manifestations of human feeling while humanity was being trampled on.
