Five sticks of dynamite attached to a lighted, nine-foot fuse, powerful enough according to police to “have damaged the entire neighborhood and possibly cause loss of life,” were found by police here early today on the lawn in front of Anshe Emes Congregation, a small synagogue located in the heart of a thickly populated area of small homes. The synagogue was closed for the night at the time the dynamite was found.
According to the police authorities, a passerby noticed the burning fuse in front of the synagogue and telephoned police headquarters. Police bomb experts and firemen who responded found that seven feet of the long fuse had burned down. The flame on the fuse was extinguished, and there was no damage. Detectives said they will reassemble the contrivance and try to trace the perpetrators of the intended explosion through fingerprints and other identifying marks.
