The people of Ireland were honored by the New York United Jewish Appeal for aiding Jewish Displaced Persons in Europe after the war.
Ambassador Frederick H. Boland, Irish Permanent Representative to United Nations, received the award on behalf of his country at a special ceremony held at UJA headquarters. At same time Robert Briscoe, Jewish Lord Mayor of Dublin, was also honored for his many services on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal in the cause of Jewish survival. Ambassador Boland was presented with a scale replica of Michelangelo’s Moses Mayor Briscoe was presented with an illuminated version of the Haggadah.
The presentations were made by Louis Broido, vice-chairman of the Board of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York. Mr. Broido noted that the UJA felt “great admiration and gratitude to the people of Ireland for the sincere and deeply-felt sympathy they have shown for Jewish refugees and for the people of Israel.” He recalled “with glowing gratitude” that Ireland had made a special contribution of several millions of pounds of specially slaughtered kosher meat to Jewish Displaced Persons on the European continent.
