Tens of thousands of Israelis and visitors, including President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, attended the Levant Fair which opened today outside Tel Aviv, at the International Fair Grounds. Mr. Ben-Zvi opened the fair officially, as the well-known “flying camel” of the Fair flew from the mastheads and flagpoles fronting the pavilions which included exhibits by 36 countries.
The United States presented a large exhibit, and great crowds flocked to the American pavilion. Other impressive exhibits were arranged by the Philippines, Brazil, Poland, Yugoslavia, Austria and Cyprus. A number of exhibitors avoided establishing their own pavilions, fearing the Arab boycott, but were represented through goods shown at the Fair by their Israeli agents.
Paul Screvane, president of the New York City Council, met today with Finance Minister Levi Eshkol in his effort to induce Israel to reverse a decision not to participate in the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. Israel decided against participation because of the estimated $2,000,000 expenditure which would be involved.
