With a 100-page issue which included valuable, historical articles, as well as greetings from President Kennedy, Pennsylvania Governor David L. Lawrence, Philadelphia Mayor James H. J. Tate, and national and local leaders of the Jewish community, the Jewish Exponent, a weekly published here, celebrated its 75th anniversary today.
The Exponent’s first issue was published April 15, 1887. The editors were Henry S. Morais, Charles Hoffman and Melvin G; Winstock, while the business manager was Nathan Billstein. Albert H. Lieberman is now president of the newspaper’s board of directors; Sylvan B. Kling is editor; and Jules D. Miller is business manager. The newspaper has an audited circulation of 52,723.
Among national Jewish leaders who greeted the Exponent on its birthday were Edward M. M. Warburg, chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee; Simon Litt, president of the National Jewish Welfare Board; Joseph Meyerhoff, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal; Dr. Joachim Prinz, president of the American Jewish Congress; and Irving Kane, president of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. Special greetings were received also from the heads of the city’s two largest daily newspapers, The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Evening Bulletin.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
