The Quebec Association of Protestant School Boards recommended this week to the Royal Commission investigating education in this province that Jews and other non-Protestants and non-Catholics be permitted to serve on the Protestant school boards.
At the same time, the Protestant School Board of Montreal recommended that the Government revive the Jewish School Commissioners Act of 1930, so that the Jewish community could officially present its opinions on education to the Protestant boards.
Under the 1930 Act, the Jewish community was empowered to establish a separate Jewish school system to be financed out of tax revenues. The Jews chose, however, to make an agreement with the Protestant board, whereby Jewish children attend the Protestant schools. Catholics have their own school system.
