Israeli cotton yarn mills may be forced to cut production, with the result that many workers would be laid off, due to the United States ban on cotton yarn imports from this country, the textile department of the Israel Manufacturers Association warned here today. Mill owners today requested the Government to find ways to aid the industry, which is threatened as a result of the new American ruling.
According to the latest figures, Israel exported $7, 000, 000 worth of cotton yarn to the United States this year. The industry had planned on shipping 40 percent of its output to the U.S.A. in 1962. Editorials in today’s Israeli newspapers expressed the hope that Washington would reconsider its ban and continue the policy of encouraging traditional free world trade.
