A large group of Jewish education leaders in the United States and Canada, designated by the National Council for Jewish Education, left here last night via El Al Airlines to attend the First World Conference on Jewish Education, to open August 12th in Jerusalem.
The delegation was led by Samuel J. Borowsky, general secretary of the National Council. Another group, headed by Dr. Joseph Diamond, NCJE president, left earlier this month. 60 professional educators and 60 lay leaders will constitute the delegation to the World Conference. Philip W. Lown, president of the American Association for Jewish Education, is leading the over-all delegation to the Conference.
Mapping a program of cooperation among leaders of Jewish education in countries outside of Israel is the basic aim of the Jerusalem parley which is sponsored by the World Conference of Jewish Organizations. Common problems and possible solutions will be considered by Jewish educators and lay leaders from various parts of the world. It will study the needs of Jewish communities in different countries and will formulate plans for the improvement of Jewish education on all age levels.
Prior to the convening of the World Conference, the National Council delegation will hold a 2-day meeting in Jerusalem to crystallize its stand on a number of issues facing the Conference and to work out a program of action. They also will meet professional leaders of Israel and other countries to exchange views and to discuss professional problems affecting Jewish education throughout the world. The NCJE group also wishes to explore the possibilities of establishing a World Council of professional educational organizations.
