Chairman Francis E. Walter, of the House Committee on Un-American Activities, today urged in a speech in Congress, that the State Department revoke the United States landing rights of El Al Israel Airlines, if the line “cooperates” in moves that result in the liberation of Dr. Robert A. Soblen.
Rep. Walter told the House that the Secretary of State should notify El Al in advance that “they will be held responsible for preventing the decision of the United States courts to be carried out.” He indicated that the Israel Government would be held responsible by his committee if it rejects England’s demands that an El Al plane fly Dr. Soblen to the United States.
Charging that “a strange combination of forces is working to thwart” Soblen’s return, he said: “We must deal with our friends” as the United States dealt with Poland years ago, when it barred the Polish ship Batory from docking in the U. S. because that vessel had been used by Gerhard Eisler, when the latter jumped bail as a convicted Communist.
