The Arab refugee problem will not be solved in the “immediate future,” it was predicted here today by United Nations Acting Secretary General U Thant in the annual report on U.N. affairs submitted by him to the General Assembly. Reviewing the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency — which provides aid to Palestine refugees — he said:
“In the interest of international peace and security, it was important that an equitable solution to the problem of the Palestine refugees be found as soon as possible. At the same time, both the history and the present status of the problem bore evidence that a solution in the immediate future might not prove possible. Hence, for some time to come, there might well be no practical alternative to continuing to provide relief services to refugees in need, and educational services for refugee children and young adults.”
Another section of the report, dealing with the United Nations Emergency Force, told the Assembly that the situation along the borders between Israel and the Caza Strip has been “relatively” peaceful of late.
