British Shakespearian actor Sir John Gielgud was given an overwhelming ovation Saturday night after a brilliant performance of “The Ages of Man,” a collection of extracts from Shakespeare’s works.

This was the first highlight of the second International Festival of Music, Drama and the Arts which opened last week in Jerusalem in the presence of almost the entire diplomatic corps and with the participation of Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister and Jerusalem’s Mayor Mordecai Ish-Shalom. Two hundred dancers participated in the opening ceremonies, demonstrating folk dances from various countries. Among the dancers were Yemenite, Kurdish, Cochin, Circassian and Arab troupes.

Future programs during the month-long festival will include performances of Greek theatre, an Italian Chamber Orchestra will perform and amongst individual participants from all over the world will be Igor Stravinsky and American pianist Van Cliburn.
