Robert M. Morgenthau, scion of a famous American Jewish family, was nominated today for the New York State Governorship by the Democratic State convention, meeting at Syracuse. Thus he will be the opponent, in next November’s state election, of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, certain of nomination for re-election by the Republican Party convention at Buffalo.
Both major parties in this state are sure to have a total of four Jewish candidates for major office. The Republicans have scheduled nominations for re-electing United States Senator Jacob K. Javits and State Attorney General Louis J. Lefkowitz. The Democrats are slated to nominate for re-election State Controller Arthur Levitt.
The Democratic nominee for the governorship is a son of former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr., a close associate of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Henry Morgenthau, Sr., a supporter of President Woodrow Wilson, served as the United States Ambassador to Turkey, and was active on many other diplomatic missions under President Wilson.
