Canadian Prime Minister John G. Diefenbaker lauded Israel last night as a bastion of freedom in the Middle East, and praised the Canadian Zionist movement for its 60 years of activity in this country as “a partnership among Jews and a fellowship with history. “
Addressing the 36th national convention of the Zionist Organization of Canada, the Prime Minister told the delegates that they had shared in the achievement of the creation of Israel. “To few in history, ” he declared, “has it been given to see a dream come true, to have a hand in the handwork of destiny, to know that an effort now made is being rewarded today, not at some distant time when the giver cannot share the fruits. “
Noting that Israel’s accomplishments since its creation 14 years ago “are there for all to see, ” the Premier said; “Small states everywhere, poor in resources but rich in spirit, can learn much from the Jewish people, who, undaunted, have brought into being a State politically strong, socially helpful to the needy, and economically ever stronger. “
Joseph N. Frank of Montreal, was elected president of the ZOC at the final session of the convention today. He succeeded Lawrence Freiman of Ottawa, who served two terms. Also elected were Bertram Loeb of Ottawa, and John R. Devor of Toronto, vice-presidents; Leon Levin of Montreal, treasurer; and Robert H. Soren, Toronto, secretary.
