The Yiddish press in the United States was singled out for special honors this weekend when scrolls of honor were presented to the Jewish Daily Forward and the Jewish Day-Journal, citing the Yiddish press in the United States as the reflection of “the aspirations of newcomers to cur shores,” picturing the achievements of immigrants in this country.
The scrolls were presented to the newspapers at the 33rd annual convention of the Council of Organizations of United Hias Service. Murray I. Gurfein, president of United Hias Service, and James P. Rice, executive director, reported on the work of the worldwide migration agency. Mr. Gurfe in noted that United Hias Service will help approximately 9, 100 migrants and refugees to resettle, in 1962, in the United States, Brazil, Canada and Australia.
The citations to the two newspapers were accepted on behalf of their dailies, respectively, by Dr. Lazar Fogelman, editor, and Adolph Held, manager, of the Jewish Daily Forward; and by Morris Weinberg, publisher, and David L. Mekler, editor of the Jewish Day-Journal. Addresses were also made at the convention by Louis Gallack, chairman of the Council of Organizations; Hugo E. Rogers, a vice-president of United Hias Service; Nathan Chanin, general secretary of the Workmen’s Circle; and Henoch Mendelson and Israel Breslau, of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
