In spite of a general liberalization by the Communist regime in Hungary, Jews are still prevented from leaving the country, the influential Paris newspaper, Le Monde, reported today.
The report was based on the findings of a special correspondent, Thomas Schreiber, who returned to France. The French daily declared that the Hungarian Government “has not changed its attitude on the emigration of its Jewish community.”
The Paris newspaper reported that there were many Hungarian Jews who wanted to join close relatives abroad. It added that “the attitude which the Hungarian Government will take on the relatively minor issue of Jewish immigration will give a new indication of the regime’s general evolution.”
