The American Jewish family is taking on many undesirable characteristics from an environment in the general community, Dr. Alfred M. Neumann, executive director of the Jewish Family and Children’s Service, warned. He voiced that caution as he was being honored by the community on the occasion of the agency’s 15th anniversary.
There have been increasing intermarriages as a result of environmental influences, he said, as well as more divorces and family breakdowns among the Jewish people, juvenile delinquency, illegitimacy and drinking.
“The vast movement to the suburbs,” said Dr. Neumann, “the increasing number of wives and mothers who are working, greater recreational opportunities, including bowling alleys, country clubs, and community centers, have to a great extent externalized American family life, including Jews, ” Dr. Neumann stated.
