Mayor Robert F. Wagner today proclaimed Sunday, January 6, as Farband Charter Day in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the grant of a New York state charter to the Labor Zionist Order.
The ceremony was held in the mayor’s office where the mayor presented the proclamation to Meyer L. Brown, president of Farband. Others participating in the presentation ceremony were Louis Segal, Farband general secretary; Samuel Bonchek, Farband national vice-president, as well as other national officers.
The Charter Day anniversary will be observed at a Farband Charter Day luncheon Sunday at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. More than 1,000 members and guests, including delegations from all parts of the United States and Canada, are expected to attend. Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, will be the principal guest speaker. The luncheon will be the climax of a three-day National Planning Conference at which plans will be developed for the year-long observance of the 50th anniversary of the Jewish fraternal order throughout 1963.
The achievements of Farband were hailed in messages from President Ben-Zvi and Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion of Israel and from George Meany, president of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations.
