The Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Rabbinical Assembly, representing respectively the Reform and Conservative rabbinate, announced today the presentation of a Joint award to a noted Israeli scholar for his “outstanding contributions to Jewish history and thought. “
Dr. Yehezkel Kaufmann, Professor Emeritus of Bible at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem was cited by the two rabbinical bodies for scholarly works in Hebrew which include a four-volume study of Jewish life entitled “In Exile and Alien Lands, ” and an eight-volume “History of the Religion of Israel, ” the latter published in an abridged English translation in 1960 under the title “The Religions of Israel. ” The citation was accompanied by a research grant.
In making the unprecedented award, the Reform and Conservative Rabbinical bodies expressed “gratitude” for Professor Kaufmann’s many contributions to scholarship and voiced the hope that he would “continue to enhance Jewish learning for many years to come.” Numerous members of the Central Confereice and the Rabbinical Assembly have studied under Professor Kaufmann in Jerusalem.
