Brussels Jewish officials said today they had rejected an offer for a site at the Brussels national airport for a synagogue because they lacked funds for such a project.
Belgian authorities offered the site to various religious groups for construction of chapels but on condition that each religious group finance its chapel without government aid. Only the Catholics have accepted the offer.
The Jewish officials said they currently had too large expenses, particularly for repairs to the Great Synagogue in Brussels and for the building of the first synagogue for the Belgian Sephardi community.
