The World Conference on Jewish Education announced establishment at a meeting here last night of a World Council of one year’s duration to be composed of 50 representatives from all major Jewish communities. The new Council was instructed to act within the frame of reference set in the resolution of the first meeting held in Jerusalem last year, which bars establishment of schools by the World Council and specifies a policy of non-interference in the basic philosophies of various approaches to Jewish education.
Council representatives resolved to set up centers of the Council in Israel, Europe, South America and North America. These centers will serve as clearing houses, collect and disseminate information and material in Jewish education, programs of study and educational aids of all kinds.
A presidium was named, consisting of Dr. Nahum Goldmann, Label A. Katz, B’nai B’rith international president, Sir Barnett Janner, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, and Zalman Shazar, head of the Jewish Agency education department. Yehuda Hellman, secretary-general of the World Conference of Jewish Organizations, was named liaison between the presidium and the Jewish communities and organizations. Dr. Moshe Avidor, director general of the Jewish Agency in Israel was named coordinator in Israel.
