Plans for the adoption of a proposed law that would have deterred German scientists from working on the Egyptian weapons-development program were dropped by the Bundestag, West Germany’s lower house of Parliament, the press here reported today. Leading members of Parliament expressed doubts as to the effectiveness of such a law.
The law would have taken the form of an amendment to current legislation which prohibits West Germans from manufacturing bacteriological, chemical or nuclear missile devices for military purposes in this country. The amendment would have extended the prohibition to Germans working abroad.
A resolution condemning the participation of German scientists in the Egyptian weapons projects, which were seen as “apt to threaten the peaceful existence of Israel, ” was adopted today in Cologne by German students and school teachers who recently toured Israel. The resolution, forwarded to Parliament, also criticized the Federal Government for its failure to date to establish diplomatic relations with Israel.
