Preparations for one of the largest and most important mass trials of alleged war criminals ever held in West Germany–the proceedings against 24 persons charged with killing hundreds of thousands of Jews at Auschwitz–are being completed here now, but the arrangements are so complex that the trial may not open until next January, Dr. Joachim Greiff, president of the Frankfurt District Court, said today.
According to Dr. Greiff, the trial, once it is opened, may run for several months. Arrangements must be made, he said, for alternate judges and reserve jurors so that the proceedings will not be interrupted, once they are begun. The plans are to hold the trial in one of the large auditoriums in this city, with room for 150 journalists and 250 members of the general public. The newspapermen, he said, will have 20 telephone trunks and 10 teletype lines at their disposal.
