A resolution calling upon both the United States and the Soviet Union to give Israel “proper guarantees” for its security was adopted here today at the closing session of Israel’s Liberal party convention. The party met here for six days in the first convention held since its formation.
The Liberals also voted a demand on the Government that it form in the Parliament a “supreme security council” which would be consulted on all matters affecting the nation’s security. On the issue of Government policy regarding the German scientists employed by Egypt, for the development of nonconventional weapons aimed at Israel’s destruction, the party took a moderate position. It rejected those critics of the government who protest against all Government actions on such issues. At the same time, the convention criticized the Government for limiting Parliamentary debate on such issues.
In other resolutions, the party called for increased immigration, tighter liaison between Israel and Jewish communities abroad, strengthening of education, and strengthening of the Zionist movement. The delegates elected a 560-member council from which the executive committee will be chosen. Younger members of the party objected to the large size of the council, but were out voted. The Liberals re-elected Pinhas Rosen and Poretz Bernstein as co-presidents. Mr. Rosen is former Minister of Justice. Mr. Bernstein is now the party’s candidate for the Presidency of Israel.
