Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion reiterated today Israel’s willingness to consider general disarmament for Israel and the neighboring Arab states under mutual inspection even before any international disarmament went into effect.

He also said that Israel would accept United Nations supervision over disarmament and that Israel’s policy in this respect was not conditioned on general world disarmament. He made the statements in reply to Shmuel Mikunis, Communist deputy, who had asked whether the Government would support the initiative of “other factors” to establish the Mediterranean area as a nuclear-free zone.

This was a reference to a proposal made by the Soviet Union to Mediterranean area countries two weeks ago which was promptly branded a propaganda act by the United States.
