Franz Josef Strauss, former West German Defense Minister, left Israel as quietly this weekend as he arrived after an 11-day visit which he said left him “deeply impressed” with the country’s achievements. He was seen off by Deputy Defense Minister Shimon Peres and other officials of the Defense Ministry.
He hailed “the initiative and the spirit of sacrifice” he observed in the buildup of the country. He repeated his promise to do his utmost in the West German Parliament to bring about diplomatic relations between West Germany and Israel.
Mr. Strauss also lauded Israel for its collective farm settlements, industry, scientific and technological progress, as well as for the progress of Israel’s army and air force. He expressed his gratitude to Israel’s people for greeting him “correctly and in a friendly way.”
