A 17-year-old high school student who staged a mock hold-up against a bearded Hassidic rabbi today was given a suspended sentence on a charge of common assault and was put on probation for one year.
The boy, Gary Wayne Sownby, had stuck a toy pistol into the ribs of Rabbi Mayer Grunwald who was walking along a street here. Sownby was aided by a younger accomplice whose name was withheld because of his age and who has since been tried in Juvenile Court here. The incident received prominent play in Toronto newspapers because it coincided with the recent wave of swastika daubings here.
