Secretary of State Dean Rusk today lauded Egypt in testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stating that Nasser “has adopted a non-alignment policy increasingly more compatible with free world interests,” and urging the committee to continue large-scale economic assistance to Egypt.

Testifying on the pending Foreign Assistance Bill, Mr. Rusk strongly defended aid to Egypt. He told the committee that when America suspended aid in 1954-1958, Egypt turned away from the West but that since aid was resumed in 1959, there has been “a gradual reversal of the adverse situation.” He characterized support of Egypt as vital to American security interests.
