Dr. John H. Davis, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, the UN organization that aids the Arab refugees in four Arab countries adjacent to Israel, resigned today, effective December 31, 1963. He has held the post since February 1959.

Secretary-General U Thant, who announced the resignation, said Dr. Davis was quitting “for compelling personal reasons.” His successor, said Mr. Thant, will be named soon. Meanwhile, the UN chief said, Dr. Davis will still present his agency’s annual report to the next General Assembly, which is to convene in September. An American, Dr. Davis was formerly on the faculty of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Business Administration.
