Israel will buy more wheat and lumber from Western Canada, according to a statement made here today by Y. Narkiss, Israel’s Consul and Trade Commissioner at Montreal. He said Israel had recently contracted for Canadian lumber to make 2, 000, 000 crates for citrus exports. Israel also plans to buy chemicals and furs in Western Canada, he said.
The Israeli official visited Winnipeg as part of a swing through Western Canada aimed at stimulating Israel-Canadian trade. He reported that Israel had almost doubled her exports to Canada between 1960 and 1962 from $2,496,000 to $5, 732, 000. Canadian exports to Israel rose from $6, 200, 000 in 1960 to $8,400, 000 in 1961. About half of these exports consisted of wheat. Israel’s exports to Canada include Jaffa oranges industrial diamonds and textiles, Mr. Narkiss said.
