A pledge to classify and keep records of job-seekers only on the basis of merit, urged among others by Jewish organizations here, has been signed by 76 owners of private employment agencies in the Detroit area, the Fair Employment Practices Commission reported today.
The Declaration of Equal Employment Opportunity was developed by the FEPC and presented at a meeting of job agencies as an outgrowth of a survey by the American Jewish Congress, indicating that many of the agencies serviced job order requests which discriminated on the basis of race and religion.
The agencies subscribing to the pledge represent about 60 per cent of the Class II agencies in Michigan, Edward N. Hodges III, FEPC executive director, said. Class II licenses exclude agencies dealing exclusively with referrals of baby sitters and domestics. Mr. Hodges said that some 50 agencies failed to respond.
