Western diplomatic circles here received word today that Egyptian scientists were “shopping” around Western capitals for a space-tracking station to use in connection with Egypt’s new stepped-up rocketry-space program. While the reports indicated that Egypt would prefer to buy such equipment from the United States, American officials continued to maintain that they had no knowledge of an impending Washington-Cairo deal along such lines.
Meanwhile, however, diplomats here heard today that Hassan Marei, head of the Egyptian Space Research Committee at Cairo, has reportedly said that the United States had agreed to start building a space-tracking station in Egypt before the end of 1963. Marei was definitely confirmed as having made such a recommendation to his own Minister for Scientific Research a month ago.
