Washington Negroes Reported Showing ‘tinge’ of Anti-semitism

The Washington Post, in a staff-written survey of Negro attitudes, reported today that “emerging for the first time among Washington Negroes, is a tinge of anti-white and anti-Semitic feeling.” This feeling was described as neither deep nor widespread but representative of “the Negro rebellion against his status.”

President James M. Nabrit, Jr., of Howard University (a Negro institution) said that “in the Negro’s gyrations at the moment, he is just attacking everybody. But if we’re going to embrace racial discrimination against anybody, we’re lost.” The conclusion of the Washington Post was that “in the present situation, the Washington Negro can be expected to be oversensitive. He will see racial discrimination in instances where none exists–much as some American Jews of a generation ago, fighting anti-Semitism, saw it every-where.”
