The Canadian Jewish Congress today conveyed to the Ambassador of Austria to Ottawa, Dr. Eugen Buresch, the concern of the Jewish communities over the release from Austrian custody of Franz Murer, former Gestapo chief in Vilna. He was treed recently after a trial in Graz.
In asking the Ambassador to convey to the Austrian Government “the anxiety of the Canadian Jewish Community in this matter, ” Michael Garver, president of the CJC,emphasized that ‘surely the victims of Nazism who were fortunate enough to have escaped have a right to demand the trial and punishment of the guilty, and surely decency requires that the memories of the immediate victims be not sullied by the escape of people such as Murer. ” The Austrian Ambassador replied that he will forward the protest to the competent authorities in Austria.
