The first performance in Switzerland of “The Deputy,” the German play claiming that the late Pope Pius XII failed to take a stand against the Nazi genocide of Jews, took place last night at the Basle Municipal Theater under the protection of more than 100 policemen.
The police were called in after the theater management received anonymous letters and telephone calls threatening bomb explosions in the theater, a synagogue and a Masonic lodge if the play was performed. Written by Rolf Hochhut, the play contends that the late Pontiff did not adequately oppose the Nazi wartime slaughter of European Jewry.
Fireman who were posted in the area in the event the threats were carried out did not have to act but the police had to use their batons against demonstrators. In addition to the protesting demonstrators, Catholics organized a silent march. The full house attending the initial performance applauded the play.
