Official sources here denied today a report that Israel recently complained to the Belgian Fabrique Company about its alleged sale of Israeli Uzzi submachine guns to South Africa. The sources said that, since 1961, when Israel made it clear to the Belgian firm that it opposed such sales, no information had been received on any further arms transactions with South Africa.

Israel has a limited agreement with the Fabrique firm for an exchange of knowledge in the manufacture of Uzzi parts, which are made in Israel and in Belgium. Under that agreement no sale is permissible to a third party without prior consent by Israel. The Belgian firm has been informed by Israel that it opposes the supply of arms to any area of “international tension” or to “colonial states engaged in suppressing national movements fighting for freedom.”
