A 1964-65 Jewish Agency budget proposal for 340,000,000 pounds ($113,333,333) about 60,000,000 pounds ($20,000,000) less than the current budget, was placed before the Agency plenary session here today.
Agency treasurer Aryeh Pincus, in presenting the proposal, indicated that expenditure details had not yet been determined. They will be submitted to the next Agency executive plenary in February.
He added that the 1964 fiscal year was expected to be the fourth in a row of large immigration with expenses rising and with no commensurate rise in income. The budget and the situation of the World Zionist Organization have been under discussion at the current plenary since last Thursday.
Moshe Sharett, Agency executive chairman, told the press that relations between the Israel Government and the World Zionist executive were steadily improving. He said the two were working very closely together and “in an atmosphere of great mutual understanding” in dealing with the problems of immigrant absorption.
He reported that there was also recognition of the need for joint Government-World Zionist action “to assure a Zionist future” in Jewish communities outside of Israel. He added that the present state of relations was “not necessarily” due to the recent change in Israel’s Government, when Levi Eshkol succeeded David Ben-Gurion as Premier, but rather to the fact that “we all learned from experience.”
