New Commander Appointed of U.N. Forces on Egyptian-israeli Frontier

Major General Carlos Flores Paiva Chaves, of Brazil, was appointed by Secretary-General U Thant today as commander of the United Nations Emergency Force, the 5,000-man body that stands on guard in the Gaza Strip and along the Egyptian sector of the Sinai Desert at Sharm el-Sheikh, maintaining the uneasy peace between Egypt and Israel.

Two weeks ago, Mr. Thant appointed another Brazilian, General of the Army Oswaldo de Araujo Motta, to take over the UNEF command from Lt. Gen. Gyani, of India, who asked leave to resign his post after four years of service on behalf of the UN. Today, however, Mr. Thant was informed that the former appointee is ill and cannot assume his UNEF post. Gen. Paiva Chaves will come here early next month for briefing, and will then proceed to Gaza to relieve Gen. Gyani.
