Moshe Sharett, Israel’s former Prime Minister, now chairman of the Jewish Agency executive, said here today that Syria and Lebanon are not in any position to put diverted waters of the Jordan River to any practical use.
Addressing ceremonies here at the opening of a new Young Poate Zion center, Mr. Sharett said that only Jordan and lsrael could be the beneficiaries of the three streams which are the tributaries of the Jordan River.
Recalling that the Jordan River project, devised by the late Eric Johnston, had been initiated by the President of the United States with the full knowledge of the United Nations Secretarial Mr. Sharett pointed out that Jordan was the first nation to proceed with its implementation, and that Israel was now engaged in the final stages of the execution of its irrigation project.
The measures for water diversion discussed in Cairo. he declared, were not meant to safeguard economic interests of any Arab state. He charged that their sole purpose was to harm Israel by crippling its agricultural developed.
