A resolution urging liberalization of the divorce law in New York State, which now permits divorces only on the ground of adultery, was adopted here today at the annual meeting of the New York Board of Rabbis. The Board represents Orthodox, Reform and Conservative rabbis in this city and vicinity. Rabbi Max Schenk was elected president of the organization.
Other resolutions adopted by the Board affirmed continuous opposition to all religious observances in the public schools; called for expansion of New York City’s “Fair Sabbath Law” to include the entire state; urged intensification of Jewish education to counter assimilationist trends; requested the United States Senate to ratify the United Nations Convention Against Genocide; commended United States support for Israel’s water plan; and requested the U.S.A. to help bring about peace between. Israel and the Arab states.
