Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Isser Yehuda Unterman. 78, was elected today as Israel’s Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi, filling a post which has been vacant since the death of Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog in 1959.
Rabbi Unterman was elected over Chief Army Chaplain Shlomo Goren by a vote of 60 to 57. The incumbent Sephardi Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim, was re-elected, over Rabbi Ovadia Hadaya.
