Josef Klaus, Austria’s new Chancellor, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today that he felt that the existing Austrian-West German compensation agreement was adequate to cover the needs of Austrian victims of the Nazi regime. Many of those victims are Jews.
He said that no new regulations were envisaged for any improvement in the situation of those victims and that the issue was not included during the negotiations between the Peoples Party and the Socialist Party out of which the new coalition emerged which made him Chancellor. However, he added, if new problems arise requiring action, the People’s Party would support such demands by the victims of Nazism.
