New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and Mayor Robert F. Wagner have designated tomorrow, April 9, as “Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Commemoration Day.” The day will mark the 21st anniversary of the revolt against the Nazis by the Jewish ghetto fighters in 1943.
In ceremonies tomorrow sponsored by the Zionist Organization of America, along with a number of other Jewish organizations Times Square will be renamed “Warsaw Ghetto Square” for the day.
In his proclamation marking the occasion, Gov. Rockefeller lauded “the heroes of the Ghetto of Warsaw along with the 6, 000, 000 of their fellow Jews who were slain by the oppressor.”
Mayor Wagner declared in his statement that the “heroic opposition of the thousands of Polish Jews in Warsaw against Nazi tyranny stands as a beacon of hope at a time when hope was all but forsaken. Twenty-one years ago, men, women and children gave up their lives rather than submit to slavery. Let us never forget this heroic moment in history.”
